How to choose your Chastity cage: materials, sizing, and comfort
Updated: 2 days ago
This is, without a doubt, the question I get most from beginners: "which cage should I buy?" The honest answer is: it depends on your body, your budget, and how long you plan to wear it. Let's go through it piece by piece.
This is the second piece in a four-part series to get you ready for Locktober. Last week, we covered what chastity actually is, who it's for, and the benefits it brings for both wearer and keyholder. If you've got the "why" sorted, it's time for the "how": choosing the cage that actually fits your body.

The materials available
Polycarbonate / rigid plastic
Usually the most accessible and lightest entry point. Good for first-timers, passes through metal detectors (useful if you travel), but tends to be less durable long-term and can become porous over time, which makes hygiene harder.
Medical-grade silicone
Flexible, comfortable for extended wear and for sleeping in, but generally offers less real restriction since the material gives under pressure. A good option for beginners who want to get used to the sensation without extreme discomfort.
Stainless steel / titanium
The most durable and most "definitive" option in terms of restriction. It's heavy (which, for many, is part of the fetish, feeling that constant weight), hypoallergenic in most cases, and easy to keep clean. It's also the most expensive option.
3D-printed resin
Increasingly popular because it allows full customization of the mold to the wearer's body, reducing fit problems. It's a bigger investment and requires very precise measurements, but it solves most of the discomfort issues you'll find with generic off-the-shelf materials.
How to measure yourself correctly
Never buy a cage by eye. Serious brands always ask for three main measurements: length (from base to tip, at rest, never erect), the shaft circumference (to choose the right tube), and the base ring circumference, which determines the size of the ring that sits behind the testicles. This last one is the most important and the most commonly miscalculated, a ring that's too tight cuts off circulation; a ring that's too loose lets the cage slide and, in some cases, lets you slip out of it entirely, which defeats the whole purpose. Most brands sell measuring/sizing kits with several ring sizes for exactly this reason, so always buy a sizing kit before committing to a final device.
Signs that the fit is wrong
Sharp pain, numbness, skin discoloration (bluish or very pale), swelling that doesn't go away after removal, or difficulty urinating comfortably. All of these signs mean immediate removal and reassessment of size. A properly fitted device lets you urinate sitting down without much difficulty, doesn't cut off circulation, and should be wearable for several hours without sharp pain (some initial adjustment discomfort in the first days is normal; pain is not).
Hygiene: how to wash with and without the cage
With extended wear, hygiene is the part most beginners underestimate. Never go longer than 24–48 hours without cleaning, depending on the device and the manufacturer's instructions. Some models let you wash directly in the shower while locked, using a low-pressure showerhead aimed at the drainage slots most models have exactly for this purpose. Use unscented, neutral soap, and dry thoroughly before locking back up, I recommend using a hair dryer in the cold or low heat. For deeper cleaning, most keyholders agree on a fixed weekly schedule with their partner/keyholder for full removal, cleaning of both the device and the body, and relocking. This moment can actually become an erotic ritual in itself, and it's something I regularly build into the dynamics I oversee.
Next week, the focus shifts. We'll talk about the keyholder's role, how to negotiate rules, how to use numbered security padlocks, and how to store the key so the commitment is real.
